To be successful at their job, service professionals, in this case a Garage door service professional must be able to note, speak, and listen effectively. So the basics of communication, right? If you have been to a local fast-food lately or even to regular outlet you will notice the lack of these basic skills. Of all basic skills, listening may be the most fundamental.
Efficient and effective listening appears to be the hardest to grasp, in part, because people often are more focused on what they’re saying than on what they’re hearing in return. The garage door service professional I met propounded me with his ability to do both. He knew what he was talking about and took my “knowledgebase challenged words” for my problem and guided me through to what the real issue was. Read more about garage door repair Boca Raton
Furthermore, listening is challenging for people because they don’t work as hard at it as they should. Listening is not to be confused with hearing and quite frankly it often is. However, hard work and effort is exactly what effective listening requires. It was effortless for this garage door service professional.
Good professionals will listen to your explanations, justification and motivations to help solve your problem. The garage door service professional I spoke with shared a few things with me. Below is our conversation of the first thing he taught me.
I am fascinated, (Garage door service professional), by the way you make me feel so comfortable. I notice a few techniques but I am interested in knowing your method of learning. Would you mind sharing?
(Garage door service professional), he smiled and said; it’s really not that hard. It’s like everything is life. If you concentrate hard enough on something you begin to really understand it.
At this point I was really getting excited; even his descriptive communication was clear and to the point. I asked; could you give me an example.
(Garage door service professional), he said; Why sure, have you ever been talking to a good friend or a spouse and remembered something, say a job or task that is nearing deadline or an important family matter, heck it could be thinking about what you are wanting to watch on TV that night in the middle of a conversation, and then realize that you haven’t heard a word the other person has said? There are allot of examples but those are the most common I noticed.
Grinning from ear to ear, totally relating to him, I said; so what was your solution?
(Garage door service professional), matched my grin, looked me straight in the eyes and said; I stopped thinking so much and began to listen to what a person is really saying instead of trying to interpret what they are saying as they speak it.
I was blown away by his insight to true listening. There is more I wish to share. For now please stay tuned for part 2 the basics of listening, lessons from a Garage door service professional.
